End of the Year 1st Grade Curriculum Assessment: Spelling and Math - 04/08/2013

Monkey's favorite school book of first grade.  We haven't talked much about school here on Schooling a Monkey in a while. Our focus has been on adjusting to Bo's existence and before that, our move . But, we have been plugging along this far with first grade. At the start of the school year, I put together a list of the  curriculum we wanted to use for first grade.  Since we've almost wrapped up school for the year, it's time to review and see how things worked out. Spelling Workout Level B: We managed to do about 10 of these lessons. It just wasn't very fun and I didn't feel like it was that helpful. Instead, Monkey had most of her spelling practice from simply writing things down in stories or letters, and surprisingly enough, from the game  Scribblenauts . Although it seems kind of strange to get spelling knowledge from a game, when I was about Monkey's age, we played the game King's Quest 4  (an old game, even when I was a child), which was text-based. I learned how to spell tons of words playing that game (most memorably, the word "barrel") because if you couldn't spell the word, the game couldn't recognize what you were trying to do. We may try to do this again next year. Horizons Math 1:  I love this math program. It is very straightforward, and the lessons aren't overwhelming.
