End of the Year 1st Grade Curriculum Assessment: Supplements - 04/10/2013

This is the third part in our end of year first grade curriculum assessment. Go here for part one and here for part two.  Cooking was probably our favorite supplemental activity of the year.  As you go through homeschool curriculum during the year, you find out how effective it is and if it is working for you. Sometimes it takes several months to figure out where the gaps are. If you're anything like me, you find out that you need supplements throughout the year to keep on track, or simply to keep school interesting so you don't get bored.  Here is what Monkey and I supplemented with this year: Cooking: I've been helping Monkey learn to cook in the kitchen. It's a great way to transition school concepts into the real world. Since Monkey has worked on fractions this year and reading comprehension, reading a recipe is the perfect way to use both of those skills at once. Plus, you get yummy treats! Reading: As previously stated, I was not happy with Monkey's reading curriculum for the year. So we had her read a bunch of little reader books (she loves the Mittens series the most). In the past couple of months, she has advanced tremendously in her reading, and has enjoyed The Enormous Crocodile  and she even read some of Gregor the Overlander . She wasn't able to fully read Gregor yet, but the fact that she attempted it makes my heart happy. :-) A few days ago, I also bought Reading for the Gifted Student Grade 2 (it will be a challenge for her, ...
